Walking Simulator

Walking Simulator – An environmental narrative game that consists mainly of exploration and discovery, with little to no action–can also be used as a derogatory term.

What are the types of Walking Simulators?

There aren’t exactly any “sub-genres” of a walking simulator. They’re more likely to be classified as a sub-genre to other main ones. After all, in damn near most games, you’re walking.

Crazy, right?

But let’s call out some of the games within this genre to give you an idea.
  • Drizzlepath – A pure walking sim in all sense of the word.
  • Firewatch – A waking sim where you’re a fire ranger and you speak to another ranger while making choices in what you say, as well as interacting with the environment.
  • Marie’s Room – You’re confined to a single room and interact with objects in order to reminisce about the past and piece a story together.
  • Oxenfree – A third person walking simulator where choices matter when it comes to interacting with those around you.
  • The Painscreek Killings – A murder/mystery that involves a lot of walking as you back-track from one place to another, searching for clues to a cold case.

Are Walking Simulators considered games?

So many people disagree on them being thrown into the gaming genre. After all, what kind of gamer would possibly want to do anything like walk from point A just to get to point B without any kind of interactions or killings or quests on the way?

Probably those of us who enjoy a good hike and want to sight-see environmental glory that game devs are able to achieve.

Shooting games, heavy action, stealth missions, hack and slash, questing–they get old. They get tiresome. They cause mental exhaustion depending on how long you play them. Thus, this genre is a secondary go-to in order to wind down.

So, to answer the question, in my opinion they are. Not in the traditional sense, no. Instead, they’re narrative/story-driven.
